One of the pillars of the vision of St. Michael’s church is to develop different works of mercy that helps us put our faith in action. Matthew 25:31-46 tells us how we should treat others, as if they were Christ in disguise. Continuing a long-established tradition of our 125-year-old parish, St. Michael’s provides food assistance and other basic necessities to our neighborhood residents who have low incomes, are unemployed, or are experiencing homelessness.
We received the following comments in a letter from one of our food box recipients. We are grateful that our food bank is helpful to our community and appreciate the kind words of thanks. No one should go hungry.
"I'm writing to tell you how pleased and grateful I am for the food bank at Saint Michael the Archangel Church. For the last few years, I've been coming once a month. I've always been treated kindly and tactfully and the volunteers have always shown patience with me over my special dietary needs.
"The food bank supplies me with enough food to make my small food budget stretch to cover the whole month. I especially appreciate the surprises I receive, in the nature of spices, oil, dessert, etc. These things are so expensive at the store, I used to go without. The Saint Michael's food bank has allowed me to eat healthier food and has improved my quality of life. I look forward to my visit each month.
"I'm not the kind of person that dishes out compliments right and left, but you and your staff and parishioners are doing a good job and deserve honest thanks for helping me and the other folks out. I hope you will pass my gratitude along to your staff and volunteers. Your work and theirs is much appreciated."
