Why doing a pilgrimage?
For nearly two millennia, Catholics have been going on pilgrimage, why are pilgrimages important?
Pilgrimages are an experience of conversion. We leave behind our old self and walks towards our new self.
Pilgrimages are a reminder that we are pilgrims on earth, journeying to heaven.
A pilgrimage is a very blessed experience of community, where sometimes unlikely friendships are formed because of the shared experience.
Pilgrimages have a missionary nature. As we walk we witness our faith publicly, as others see us walking and wonder what we are doing, where we are going, and why.
One of the most powerful places of pilgrimage here in the US is the Camino Real of California, which connects the 21 missions, many of which were established by St. Junipero Serra. As we go on this pilgrimage, we will walk in the footsteps of this great missionary Saint, who himself walked thousands of miles on foot to bring the Gospel to those who had never heard of Jesus Christ.
