Oregon’s Abortion History
In May of 1969, Oregon became one of the first states in the entire nation to legalize abortion. That’s four years before the U.S. Supreme Court’s infamous Roe v. Wade decision in January of 1973, which made abortion-on-demand the “law of the land” until Roe was overturned in the Dobbs v. Jackson decision in 2022. While other states have created laws banning or reducing legal abortions, Oregon still does not have a single law protecting unborn babies.
Why Do We March for Life in May?
Every year, pro-life advocates from across Oregon have gathered to march for life and make our large, peaceful pro-life presence known. Traditionally, the March was held in January to mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. But with Roe no longer the law of the land, Oregon Right to Life has begun holding the event in May – the same month that Oregon legalized abortion in 1969. This change signals our renewed focus on the responsibility of pro-life advocates to use our resources within our own state, including within the legislature, to restore the right to life for the unborn right here in Oregon.
